Donald James in the tap room

Join us in the tap room for fantastic Friday music!

“Old enough to know better and still to young to care”… is the best way to describe Donald James “DJ”. He is a country gypsy with an ocean soul. A traveler of the world and no stranger to hard work. His musical journey started when his mother taught him how to read the hymn books as a little boy so he could sing along with the congregation. He recalls: “It was almost like an awakening; suddenly I had words and rhymes running through my head”. His mother listened to a wide variety of music styles. “I grew up listening to all types of music. It occurred to me very early that there was one constant to music I liked. If it made me feel good, I listened to it.”

Waylon was the man and Rock and Roll was the sound track to the next years. Years that found him in the deserts and high country of Idaho where he sang and started writing. Music and adventure called and at 17 DJ left Idaho for the LA music scene. With his motorcycle a tank bag and a backpack, he arrived in LA and started his journey. During this time the ocean grabbed his soul. He found the same serenity in her as he did in the high country. His writing style started to take on a poetic cross between the world he was seeing, people he was meeting and his roots as a country boy.

After finding local groups of writers, DJ says; “Texas is where I really learned the craft of songwriting and it’s where I love to perform my music”. His catalogue is quickly reaching the 200 mark. “Its constantly growing. I hear things daily that inspire me to write. A statement from someone, a sign, a moment, anything. It’s like I have an antenna in my head that goes “Oh that’s a song right there.” He has been pitching his songs for years and had an opportunity to record his own EP in 2012 titled, “Steppin In Texas Time.” “It’s been a joy playing these songs and I’ve been blessed to have several used in film and television.”
